Introduction to

Theatre of the Oppressed

A sampler training in Augusto Boal’s techniques for exploring human interaction and problem-solving while enlivening personal and collective awareness and civic engagement.

Spend two and half days actively engaged in learning the dynamic, life-changing techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed, widely applicable and designed for non-actors and actors alike. From sharing meals to storytelling, image-making and improvisation, workshop members will get hands-on experience using playful yet powerful interactive, theatre-based activities that strengthen communication, listening skills, fostering consensus, opening up fresh perspectives on personal and workplace challenges and creating practical solutions for more equitable relationships and community interaction.


Who this is for:

Perfect for educators, social workers, activists & community organizers, artists, therapists & counselors, anyone interested in working towards change in their communities. For both those new to, or with experience in Theatre of the Oppressed. No theatre experience necessary.

Workshop structure

Friday, 6pm - 10pm - light vegetarian dinner included.

Saturday & Sunday 9:30am-6pm

Includes continental breakfast and healthy snacks. Lunches should be brought.



This workshop will offer training in:

• Community & ensemble-building activities

• Image Theatre

• An introduction to the process of Forum Theatre

  2. All skills are immediately applicable and widely transferable to many areas where open, honest communication is vital: from personal change to community development, from youth work, education, activism and effective group collaboration to creative conflict resolution, cross-cultural dialogue, violence prevention, leadership training and more!

The workshop fee is on a sliding scale, based on your personal income or your organizational budget (depending on who is paying). We trust you to be fully honest when assessing your ability to pay. All information is kept confidential. Limited scholarships and payment plans are available upon need so please contact us as we want to ensure the workshop is available to anyone who really wants this training.  Workshop fee includes 20 hours of training, readings, continental breakfasts, snacks and beverages.
